Sahiwal Milk

Milk obtained from the humped Indian Sahiwal cow is a rich source of A2 beta-casein (a protein which is also found in human milk). This milk has been touted as “nature’s perfect food” owing to its nutrient rich content (proteins, macronutrients, micronutrients, essential fats, and carbohydrates) and easy digestibility. Additionally, Sahiwal milk has been shown to promote immunity. It’s popularity has led to the milk becoming a dairy favorite across the globe.

Nutrition Information

Milk is a dietary staple across the world. It contains several nutrients such as calcium, magnesium, selenium, riboflavin, vitamin A, vitamin E, vitamin C, vitamin D, vitamin B12, pantothenic acid (vitamin B5), etc. Most notably, milk is a rich source of protein. Globally, cow milk is the most consumed dairy product. The proteins in cow milk are of high-quality and contain a balanced composition of all essential amino acids. Milk and its derivative products therefore play a key role in providing nutrition to humans, starting in infancy and continuing throughout life.

Milk proteins: Two major proteins - casein and whey , make up nearly 90% of milk's protein content. Beta-casein, a major protein in milk is found to have two variants - A1 and A2. Of the two, the structure of the A2 beta-casein has been found to be comparable to that of human milk. Such similarity is attributed to the various benefits of A2 milk, such as - better digestibility, lower degree of stomach discomfort, etc. Furthermore, a metabolic byproduct of A1 beta-casein called BCM-7 which has been linked to several diseases like diabetes, heart disease and autoimmune disease are expected to be non-existent with A2 beta-casein.

About Sahiwal

Often referred to as the Indian humped cattle, Sahiwal cows belong to the Zebu species of cattle originating in the Indian subcontinent. Sahiwals are known for their dairy production and tolerance of temperate climates. Their key physical characteristics include a fatty hump over the shoulders, a fading reddish brown color, a distinctive dewlap, long tail, small horn and droopy ears. Healthy Sahiwal calves weigh about 30kgs at birth and the adult cows can weigh in excess of 800kgs. Their natural gestation period is about 9.5 moths, and their milk is known to be rich in A2 beta casein. Sahiwal cows are often described to be docile and lethargic.
